When it comes to weight lifting, is it really so bad to work out on machines?

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

Does a person really get a lot stronger using free weights instead of machines?

I do a few lifts with Nautilus machines at the gym. With the machines I do the chest press, the fly, the shoulder press, and the row. With free weights I do squats, deadlifts, curls, reverse curls, and a few other lifts. The reason why I do the chest press on a machine is because I can rarely find someone to properly spot me when I am doing the bench press the conventional way with barbells and the olympic size bar. I like to max out and I can’t max out without a spotter. I have the same problem sometimes with the front squat. I can’t find two people to properly spot me when I do the front squat the conventional way with the barbells and the bar.

Note: I put this question in the Physics section because weight lifting and physics do go hand in hand and I also put it in this category because I don’t really get any answers when I put a weight lifting question in the Sports (Other) category or the Health (Diet & Fitness) category.

      Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

Olympic Dumbells are great addition to any kind of fitness equipment you may have. They offer incredible value for money, can be used around the home with virtually no additional costs, and, as we hope to demonstrate below, can really help you stay in shape and get really fit

If you’re looknig to definitely improve your physical fitness you should consider getting a set of dumbbells. These are the weights you are able to lift using just one hand rather than the long bar, or barbell, that calls for pair of hands to be able to pick up. The excellent factor about hand weights is that they induce each arm to carry out the equivalent work unlike barbells where only one part of one’s body can work that little bit more difficult to be able to compensate for the weaker side.

You cannot beat the value that dumbbell exercises delivers. You can train in your house and forget about a health and fitness center membership and the need to journey to your exercise sessions. There is virtually no set-up using olympic dumbbells. Just pick them up and commence pumping. They don’t use up a large amount of room. You may possibly use a little dumbbell stand otherwise you can easily simply have them on the ground or even in the cupboard.

      Deciding upon Your Dumbbells

Bear in mind that prolonged use of your current dumbbells is likely to make you fitter and more muscular. This means that you could quickly grow out of the first set, which means that you should take a few things into mind prior to buying.

      1. Free Weights – Should you invest in some dumbbells which all have varying plates, in most cases ranging from 1kg upto 12kg, or else should you invest in a couple of dumbbells which have free weights with them? With this choice you may well conserve on storage yet you’ll need to make the effort to add on and take off weights. The dumbbell sets will not have this issue nevertheless they will require up extra storage in your home, along with potentially the additional investment of a holder to keep them upon if they’re not in use.
      2. Remember The Grip – take a good look at the grips since the heavier the dumbbells are, the extra grip you will need to need to maintain grip of these. Try to find dumbbells which may have cushioned or even gels grips because these can help prevent you acquiring blisters if you believe you may be a frequent user.
      3. Dumbbell Sets – Together with a set of conventional, metal or iron dumbbells, you can also locate a set of dumbbells who have different weights, normally from 1kg up to 12kg. A majority of these can be bought in a conventional metal or iron, or go with the more funky vinyl protected dumbbells which are available in various elegant colours. These types offer equally a protective cover to the dumbbell itself and make them simplier and easier to handle by its user. Seek out dumbbells that have hexagonal ends because they will not likely roll away any time you place them on the floor or maybe give consideration to buying a stand to store your dumbbells after use.

      Dumbbell Workout Exercises

Bear in mind that in any training exercises, it can be crucial that you continually carry out your warm-ups to start with and constantly be sure you are doing every part properly since weight training exercise might cause harm if your muscles are not ready to do it. Additionally ensure that you commence with lighter weight loads and don’t transfer up to heavier types that you’re not confident dealing with. If you are performing these olympic dumbbell training plans only to make you stay fit and agile, then don’t bother training with heavier plates

Firm and shape your legs – To achieve this, you may make use of your dumbbells in leg squats, lunges or perform some calf lifts with your dumbbells in hand. Dumbbell squats are generally executed by standing feet separated with dumbbells grasped to sides. After this you slowly move your whole body down to a squat position, bending the knees and enabling your hips to flex backwards and your back upright. You’ll then pull your body up back to the initial position and do it again. Remember to perform the dumbbell leg squats in the right way so you won’t harm the knees

Tone those Abs – to be able to firm up those ab muscles and look outstanding wearing your bathing suit, you can also carry out dumbbell workout exercises to firm and sculpt your own stomach muscles. You can try side flexes using dumbbells upon 1 hand and help you expand the side of the stomach muscles.

Lunges with dumbbells on hand – this will help to strengthen and shape your butt in addition to strengthen your legs. Much like the leg squats, it is very important implement this particular workout in the correct way because this can damage your knee if executed incorrectly.

To be able to develop your shoulder muscle groups along with shape it, you need to use your dumbbells for side raises. Also you can do torso presses and shoulder presses for your shoulder and upper body muscles.
